Spyros Skarvelis-Kazakos


Dr Skarvelis-Kazakos joined Sussex in July 2015 and is now a Senior Lecturer in Power Electronics. He is a member of the Dynamics, Control and Vehicle (DCV) Research Group. The main focus of his research is smart grids and renewable energy integration.
He has successfully attracted over £300k of research funding for 6 research projects from the UK’s innovation agency (TSB / Innovate UK), H2020 MSCA and the industry (Arup) to work on distributed agent-based controllers, energy storage and microgrids. He is currently leading the ongoing Innovate UK project “Electrical and thermal storage optimisation in a Virtual Power Plant”. He is also developing the Energy and Transport laboratory at Sussex, which includes microgrid equipment, controller hardware and real-time network simulation / HiL equipment.

He is the main and second supervisor of three PhD students and has also managed three Research Fellows / Assistants. He has participated as lead user, co-investigator and researcher in international multidisciplinary EU projects on biofuels for Combined Heat and Power (CHP) generators (Interreg Ecotec 21), control and grid integration of Electric Vehicles (FP7 MERGE) and testing an intelligent control system he had developed (FP7 DERri). Professional activities and recognition include being a Full Member of the EPSRC Peer Review College, as well as participation in several IEEE and CIGRE Working Groups.
