Jan Cappelle graduated in 1999 at KU Leuven as electrical engineer with a master thesis in wind energy at the National Technical University of Athens (Greece). In 2008 he received a PhD with his research on the performance analysis of electric bicycles at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. As an associated professor of the KU Leuven faculty of engineering technology he founded the Energy&Automation research group at the KU Leuven campus in Ghent. His current team of 15 researchers is involved in several national and international projects in the fields of energy management, electro-mobility, photovoltaics and industrial datacom. Within these projects E&A is operating at rather high technology readiness levels. As a partner in the interreg SEEV4-city project he is leading the activities within the Kortrijk smartgrid pilot.
