Ann Nowé

Prof. Dr. Nowé Ann is a full professor (Gewoon hoogleraar ) at the VUB, Department of Computer Science where she is heading the AI lab.

Ann Nowé received her M.S. degree from Universiteit Gent, Belgium, in 1987, where she studied mathematics with a minor in computer science, and her Ph.D. degree from Vrije Universiteit Brussels (VUB), Belgium, in collaboration with Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London, U.K., in 1994.

Her major area of interest is machine learning, in particular (multi- agent) reinforcement learning. Her research output includes 200+ co-authored articles in international journals and proceedings of international conferences, as well as the organization of tutorials and workshops at international conferences, including: AAMAS, ICML and ECML. She supervised more than 20 PhDs. She regularly serves as a program committee member for international symposia, workshops and conferences including: IEEE, ICML, ECML, IJCAI, AAMAS, ANTS and reviewes for 10+ journals, publishers and funding agencies including FWO, VLAIO, NWO, ESPRC, EU. She is the former chairman of the BNVKI (BeNeLux association for Artificial Intelligence) and was a board member of ECCAI (European Coordinating Committee for Artificial Intelligence, currently named EurAI). Presently, she is a board member of IFAAMAS, The International Foundation for Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems.

Her research topics include: Machine learning, Reinforcement Learning, datamining and Bio-informatics, with applications to planning&scheduling , telecom, mechatronics, smart grids and intelligent control. More recently she also investigates how to make machine learning models more transparent and explainable to users.
